What You’ll Learn
Our course covers every aspect of fine furniture making. Under the guidance of our award-winning designer, Will Acland, and our expert tutors, you will:
• Master hand tools, power tools, and wood machinery.
• Build a solid foundation in cabinetmaking and joinery.
• Learn advanced techniques like veneering, inlay, carving, and marquetry.
• Develop skills in furniture design using SketchUp and Layout.
• Work on set projects and design your own furniture pieces.
• Create high-quality, finished pieces to take home.
International Designer Maker Course Structure
Term 1: Total Immersion
The first term is intense and focuses on building core skills. Over 14 weeks, you’ll learn:
• Hand tool preparation and use (sharpening, planing, chiseling).
• Wood machining and power tool operation.
• Traditional joinery techniques (mortise & tenon, dovetails, etc.).
• Specialist skills like carving, veneering, and jig-making.
During this phase, you’ll complete a series of set projects designed by Will Acland. These projects will build your competence and confidence, from crafting simple pieces to mastering more complex furniture.
Term 2: Building Confidence
In the second term, you will start working on self-designed projects. These are tailored to your interests and goals, allowing you to develop your own style as a designer and maker. Our tutors will guide you in designing, planning, and executing projects to professional standards. We’ll also help you explore how to set up your own business, with advice on everything from workshop setup to client management.
